Using the photo for inspiration, you have just 1000 words (including the title) to write a complete story that captures the imagination of the reader.  To be in with a chance of winning this writing competition, you must include the park bench in your story.

Consider your starting point carefully to maximise the strength of your story. We want to be hooked by every word.

Rules:

Your submission must be written in English.

It must be original and previously unpublished.

Open to writers worldwide.

Maximum 1000 words – including the title

Multiple submissions are welcome providing the correct fees are paid.

Submissions should be pasted into the body of the email rather than sending as an attachment.

Conditions of entry
• The Award is open to Nigerian Citizens normally resident in Nigeria under the age of 35. 
• Entries must be the original and published work of the author.
• Participation is free
• Individual writer must attach a copy of their CV.
• Only one entry per person.
• Entries close on 30th of May, 2015. Late entries will not be accepted.
• Each entry must be submitted as a hard copy. The entrant’s information must be attached on a separate page.
• 5 copies of the submitted book(s) must be included
• Entries will not be returned, so remember to keep a copy.
• An entry will be disqualified if it is handwritten or in manuscript formats (entries must be printed copies).
• Entries are read and judged by a panel selected by judges. If, in the opinion of the judges, no entry meets the standard expected, no award will be made. The judge’s decision is final. The organizers reserve the right to withdraw any unsuitable entry.
• Copyright of submitted work will remain with the author. The names of winning entrants and copies of their winning entries may be published on the Society’s website.
• All finalists will be notified by June. 1st, 2015

Young Investigative Journalist Award Initiative
Guidelines
  • Only natural persons from 18 to 30 years old (on the Opening date of the Contest) regardless of nationality and place of residence are eligible to take part in the Contest.
  • Participants are not obliged to have a journalism degree from a public or private school, or to be journalism students. Natural persons meeting the age requirements are eligible to participate, even if they do not have professional experience in the field of journalism.
  • Participants are required to undertake the following actions:
  1. To fill out the application form available in the especially designed webpage of the Organizer www.ijp.gr and
  2. To submit the research online. In case that the research is submitted in a language other than the Contest´s official language (Greek), it should be accompanied by an official translation.
  • Research shall be submitted in accordance with the following criteria:
  1. As 7z, ZIP, GZIP or TAR files with maximum size 50 MB or
  2. Accompanied by links with relevant content. Links should be active during the whole Contest and 3 months after its Closing date.
  • Participants are allowed to carry out journalistic research on any of the fields mentioned below, concerning citizens who live in Greece and events that have taken, take or will take place in Greek reality within its geographical territory. The central elements of the journalistic research shall be the active civic and political participation, the public interest, the supervision of the work and the decisions of Greek public authorities, the action of civil society, the action of private and public legal persons in Greece, as well as the impact all these activities have on society as a whole or on economy.
  • Research can deal with any of the following fields, either alone or in combination:
  1. Society
  2. Politics
  3. Economy
  4. Environment
  • Participants are allowed to submit digital, television, radio and multimedia (video and slideshow) journalistic research.

2015 Annual DNA Day Essay Contest

The American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) invites you to participate in the 10th Annual DNA Day Essay Contest! The contest is open to students in grades 9-12 (SS 1 – SS3)
The contest aims to challenge students to examine, question, and reflect on important concepts in genetics. Essays are expected to contain substantive, well-reasoned arguments indicative of a depth of understanding of the concepts related to the essay question. Essays are read and evaluated by several independent judges through three rounds of scoring.
Nigerian essay contest
Topic
In 1969, Jonathan Beckwith, James Shapiro, and Lawrence Eron isolated the first gene, the Lac Z gene from E.coli.  At that time, genes were thought to be discrete, contiguous segments of DNA that coded for functional protein products. Using our current understanding of the human genome, choose a phenomenon related to gene structure, products, or regulation that expands this definition of a gene. Explain the phenomenon and provide three specific examples of it in the human genome.

Guidelines
  • Essays will be accepted from high school students (grades 9-12) in the US and internationally.
  • A teacher or administrator must submit the essay and authenticate that the submission is the original work of the student.
  • Parents may submit the essays of home-schooled students only.
  • Only one entry may be submitted for each student.
  • All essays must be written in English and are limited to 750 words, including in-text citations.
  • Essay titles are optional and will be counted towards the word limit.
  • Reference lists do not count toward the 750 word limit.
  • Each teacher may only submit six student essays per class, for up to three classes.
  • Essays must be submitted electronically through the ASHG submission site no later than 5:00 pm EST on March 6, 2015. The ASHG submission site will open on January 14, 2015. Essays mailed, faxed, or emailed to the Society will NOT be accepted. Once submitted, essays cannot be changed or revised.
  • The text of student essays must be original prose unless quotations are explicitly noted. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Essays found to contain the uncited work of others will be disqualified, and the student’s teacher will be notified
  • Essays must include at least one reference. References must be clearly documented with both in-text citations and in the references list (the reference list should be separately entered into the “References” section of the submission page). Students may use either APA or MLA style for citing references. There is no restriction on how many references students may use. Quality of references will be considered by judges when scoring.  General references such as Wikipedia are considered low-quality, whereas primary literature from research journals (see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/) is considered high-quality.
